माँ कालरात्रि माँ दुर्गा का सातवाँ स्वरूप हैं, जिनकी पूजा नवरात्रि के सातवें दिन होती है। उनका रूप भयानक है, पर वे सदा शुभ फल देती हैं, इसलिए उन्हें 'शुभंकरी' भी कहते हैं। वे अंधकार, भय और दुष्ट शक्तियों का नाश करके भक्तों को निर्भय बनाती हैं।Maa Kalaratri is the seventh form of Maa Durga, worshipped on the seventh day of Navratri. Her appearance is fierce, yet she always grants auspicious results, which is why she is also called 'Shubhankari'. She destroys darkness, fear and evil forces and makes her devotees fearless.

माँ कालरात्रि का वर्ण घने अंधकार की तरह काला है और उनके केश बिखरे हुए हैं। उनके गले में बिजली की तरह चमकने वाली माला है और उनके तीन नेत्र ब्रह्मांड के समान गोल हैं। श्वास लेते समय उनकी नासिका से अग्नि की ज्वालाएँ निकलती हैं। वे गर्दभ पर सवार हैं और उनकी चार भुजाएँ हैं। दाहिनी ओर का ऊपर वाला हाथ वर मुद्रा में और नीचे वाला हाथ अभय मुद्रा में है, जबकि बाईं ओर के हाथों में लोहे का कांटा और खड्ग है।Maa Kalaratri's complexion is as dark as the deepest night and her hair is loose and flowing. Around her neck is a garland that shines like lightning, and her three eyes are round like the universe. Flames issue from her nostrils as she breathes. She rides a donkey and has four arms. Her upper right hand is raised in the boon-giving gesture and the lower right in the gesture of fearlessness, while her left hands hold an iron hook and a sword.

कथाThe story
माँ कालरात्रि की कथाThe story of Maa Kalaratri
पुराणों के अनुसार शुंभ और निशुंभ नाम के दैत्यों ने तीनों लोकों में आतंक मचा रखा था। देवताओं की प्रार्थना पर माँ दुर्गा उनके संहार के लिए युद्ध में उतरीं। इसी युद्ध में रक्तबीज नाम का दैत्य आया, जिसे वरदान था कि उसके रक्त की हर बूँद धरती पर गिरते ही उसी के समान एक नया दैत्य उत्पन्न हो जाएगा।
जब देवी ने रक्तबीज पर प्रहार किया, तो उसके रक्त से अनगिनत रक्तबीज पैदा होने लगे। तब माँ दुर्गा के तेज से माँ कालरात्रि प्रकट हुईं। उन्होंने रक्तबीज के रक्त को धरती पर गिरने से पहले ही पी लिया, और इस प्रकार उस दैत्य का अंत हुआ।
तभी से माँ कालरात्रि को अंधकार और बुराई का नाश करने वाली शक्ति के रूप में पूजा जाता है। मान्यता है कि वे अपने भक्तों को शत्रु, नकारात्मक शक्तियों और हर प्रकार के भय से मुक्त करती हैं।
According to the Puranas, the demons Shumbh and Nishumbh had spread terror across the three worlds. Answering the prayers of the gods, Maa Durga went to battle to destroy them. In this battle came the demon Raktabeej, who had a boon that every drop of his blood falling on the earth would give rise to a new demon just like him.
When the Goddess struck Raktabeej, countless copies of him sprang from his blood. Then, from the radiance of Maa Durga, Maa Kalaratri appeared. She drank Raktabeej's blood before it could touch the ground, and so the demon was finally destroyed.
Since then Maa Kalaratri has been worshipped as the power that destroys darkness and evil. Devotees believe she frees them from enemies, negative forces and every kind of fear.

स्नान और संकल्पBath and sankalp
सुबह जल्दी उठकर स्नान करें और स्वच्छ वस्त्र पहनें। गहरा नीला, लाल या स्लेटी रंग इस दिन शुभ माना जाता है। पूजा स्थान पर बैठकर माँ कालरात्रि की पूजा का संकल्प लें।Wake early, bathe and put on clean clothes. Deep blue, red or grey is considered auspicious on this day. Sit at your puja place and take the sankalp (resolve) for Maa Kalaratri's worship.

कलश और अखंड ज्योतिKalash and akhand jyoti
प्रथम दिन स्थापित कलश को प्रणाम करें और उसका जल, आम के पत्ते और नारियल ठीक से जाँच लें। अखंड ज्योति में घी या तेल डालकर उसे जलती रहने दें; ध्यान रखें कि वह बुझे नहीं।Bow to the kalash installed on the first day and check its water, mango leaves and coconut. Add ghee or oil to the akhand jyoti and keep it burning; take care that it does not go out.

सबसे पहले भगवान गणेश का स्मरण करें। फिर कलश पर रोली, अक्षत और फूल चढ़ाकर नवग्रह और सभी देवी-देवताओं का आवाहन करें।First remember Lord Ganesh. Then offer roli, akshat (unbroken rice) and flowers to the kalash and invoke the nine planets and all the deities.

माँ की प्रतिमा या चित्र के सामने दीपक जलाएँ और उनका ध्यान मंत्र पढ़कर आवाहन करें। माँ को गंगाजल से स्नान कराने की भावना करें और लाल चुनरी अर्पित करें।Light a lamp before Maa's image or picture and invoke her by reciting her dhyan mantra. Symbolically bathe her with Gangajal and offer her a red chunri.

माँ को रात की रानी या लाल गुड़हल के फूल और फूलों की माला चढ़ाएँ। रोली, कुमकुम, अक्षत, धूप और दीप से उनकी पूजा करें।Offer Maa night-blooming jasmine or red hibiscus flowers and a flower garland. Worship her with roli, kumkum, akshat, incense and a lamp.

गुड़ का भोगJaggery bhog
माँ कालरात्रि को गुड़ या गुड़ से बनी चीज़ों का भोग लगाना विशेष शुभ माना जाता है। भोग के बाद यह प्रसाद परिवार में बाँटें या किसी ज़रूरतमंद को दान करें।Offering jaggery or sweets made with jaggery to Maa Kalaratri is considered especially auspicious. After the offering, share this prasad with the family or give it to someone in need.

रुद्राक्ष या लाल चंदन की माला से 'ॐ देवी कालरात्र्यै नमः' का 108 बार जाप करें। समय हो तो दुर्गा सप्तशती या देवी कवच का पाठ करें।Chant 'Om Devi Kalaratryai Namah' 108 times on a rudraksha or red sandalwood mala. If time allows, read the Durga Saptashati or the Devi Kavach.

आरती और क्षमा प्रार्थनाAarti and kshama prarthana
कपूर या घी के दीपक से माँ कालरात्रि की आरती करें। अंत में हाथ जोड़कर क्षमा प्रार्थना करें: 'आवाहनं न जानामि न जानामि विसर्जनम्। पूजां चैव न जानामि क्षम्यतां परमेश्वरि॥' पूजा में हुई किसी भी भूल के लिए माँ से क्षमा माँगें और प्रसाद बाँटें।Perform Maa Kalaratri's aarti with camphor or a ghee lamp. Finally, with folded hands, offer the prayer for forgiveness: 'Aavahanam na jaanaami na jaanaami visarjanam, poojaam chaiva na jaanaami kshamyataam parameshwari.' Ask the Mother to forgive any mistakes in the puja and distribute the prasad.
